The Golden Key
Once in the wintertime when the snow was very deep,a poor boy had to go out and fetch wood on a sled. After he had gathered it together and loaded it,he did not want to go straight home，because he was so frozen,but instead to make a fire and warm himself a little first. So he scraped the snow away,and while he was thus clearing the ground he found a small golden key. Now he believed that where there was a key， there must also be a lock,so he dug in the ground and found a little iron chest.“If only the key fits！”he thought. “Certainly there are valuable things in the chest.”He looked，but there was no keyhole. Finally he found one，but so small that it could scarcely be seen. He tried the key, and fortunately it fitted. Then he turned it once， and now we must wait until he has finished unlocking it and has opened the lid. Then we shall find out what kind of wonderful things there were in the little chest.
Un hiver, comme le pays tout entier était recouvert de neige, on envoya un pauvre garçon chercher du bois. Avant même d'en avoir ramassé et d'en avoir chargé sa luge, il était déjà gelé comme une grive. Il se dit alors qu'avant de rentrer à la maison, il allait allumer un petit feu pour se réchauffer.Il écarta la neige et, en tâtonnant par terre, il trouva une petite clef d'or. « Une clef n'est jamais loin d'une serrure », se dit-il. Il commença à gratter de plus en plus profondément et, en effet, il découvrit une petite boîte en fer. « Pourvu que la clef puisse l'ouvrir, pensa-t- il, elle contient certainement des objets de grande valeur. »Il chercha le trou de la serrure mais ne le trouva pas ; il finit toutefois par le découvrir ; mais le trou était si petit que le garçon avait failli ne pas le voir.Il essaya la clef et, par bonheur, c'était la bonne. Il la fit tourner une fois - et maintenant, nous devons attendre qu'il ouvre complètement et qu'il soulève le couvercle ; ce n'est qu'après que nous saurons quels trésors il a trouvés dans la boîte.
